What a design system is (and why it needs auditing)

Accessibility compliance
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) set the internationally recognized standard for accessible web content. Most organizations target WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance, which covers color contrast ratios, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and focus management.
An accessibility review tests components against these criteria. It identifies which components fail, how severely, and what remediation looks like. This matters for two reasons: users with disabilities depend on accessible interfaces, and WCAG compliance is increasingly required by law in many jurisdictions.
Design token structure
Design tokens are the named values that define the visual properties of a system: the specific hex value for your primary brand color, the spacing scale, the type sizes. When tokens are well-structured, changing a brand color means updating one value and watching it propagate correctly across the product. When they're poorly structured or inconsistently applied, a change in one place breaks things elsewhere.

Not everything an audit finds needs immediate attention. Some issues are critical: an accessibility violation that blocks keyboard users from completing a key task, for example. Others are low-severity inconsistencies that can be addressed gradually. A good roadmap makes that distinction clearly.
How an audit gets done
The process typically runs over four to five business days and combines automated analysis with manual review.
Automated tools scan for obvious accessibility violations and quickly surface contrast failures, missing labels, and structural problems. They're fast and thorough for the issues they cover, but they catch roughly 30 to 40 percent of real accessibility problems. The rest require manual testing.
Manual review covers what automation misses: keyboard navigation flows, screen reader behavior, focus order logic, and the experience of completing an actual task in the interface. It also covers the qualitative dimensions of the system: whether component naming is consistent and predictable, whether the token structure makes sense, whether documentation would help a new developer get oriented quickly.
The findings from both phases go into a written report organized by category and severity. Most audits close with a debrief call where you walk through the findings in context, get your questions answered, and discuss how to approach the remediation roadmap.
What you do with the findings
The most common outcome is a phased remediation plan. You address critical accessibility violations first, since those carry legal risk and directly affect users. Component consolidation and token cleanup typically follow, since those improvements make every subsequent piece of work easier. Documentation updates tend to happen in parallel with other fixes.
Some teams use the audit findings to make the case internally for design system investment. The report provides concrete evidence of the current state, specific examples of problems, and a clear articulation of the cost of leaving them unaddressed. That's a more productive starting point for a budget conversation than a general sense that things could be better.
Others use the audit as a handoff between a legacy system and a planned rebuild. Understanding exactly what exists, and what's worth carrying forward, prevents a new system from inheriting the same structural problems as the one it replaces.
When an audit makes sense
An audit makes sense when you suspect your design system has drifted but don't have a clear picture of how far, when accessibility compliance has become a requirement and the current state is unknown, or when the system has grown organically and lacks the structure to support the team that depends on it.
It's a lower-cost intervention than a full rebuild, and it often reveals that a rebuild isn't necessary. Many systems need targeted remediation and structural improvements, not a fresh start.
